Clawing our way back into the growth zone

Growth Mindset

I hope you and your loved ones are all staying safe and healthy during these unsettling and downright scary times.

To those on the front lines caring for and protecting the health and safety of our communities here and around the world: THANK YOU. You are true heroes.

To those out there who are facing the loss of jobs, financial hardship, and otherwise battling emotional, psychological, and physical pain and suffering: HANG IN THERE and please stay strong. Things will get better. It may take a while, but we will get through this.

A few weeks ago, I shared some thoughts about the importance of overcoming fear to advance our personal and professional goals. Looking back now, those words seem rather trite.

Our context has completely changed. There is so much looming uncertainty out there and, at times, I am afraid in ways I had never even imagined. But, I am doing my best to work on it. Specifically, I am trying to find ways each day to work through and channel my fear in more productive ways.

There is a ton of content out there right now seeking to help us navigate through these times, and for me, this simple graphic shared by a friend on LinkedIn summed things up in a helpful way:

I have been unsuccessful in tracking down the original source of this graphic (please let me know if you do!), but I came across this article which explains the concept in more detail.

I am proactively trying to climb and claw my way back into the growth zone.

It is not easy and the footing is slippery at times, but remaining trenched in the fear zone simply put, sucks.

I am trying to focus on how I can continue to be creative and use my skill set to help others. I am looking for new ways to adapt my business to meet the changing needs of my clients.

For some clients, this means taking the time to step back and reassess career goals or consider changing career paths. We are revisiting personal narratives, refreshing resume or LinkedIn content to ensure that clients are properly positioning themselves for what might be next. We are taking the time to do some deeper discovery work to help uncover and identify key themes and messages that will lead to more meaningful content creation.

For other clients, this means a shift from securing and preparing for live speaking events to participating in virtual or live-streaming events. We all need to remain open to and seek out these new and innovative ways to connect with and inspire others.

Where are you on the journey out of fear into learning and growth? Reassess and try to break down your goals into more bite-sized pieces. What small steps can you take today, this week, or this month to help you on your path back to your own personal growth zone?
