Thank you, Muffet McGraw

Last week, one of the greatest collegiate basketball coaches of all time and a personal inspiration of mine, Muffet McGraw, unexpectedly retired at the top of her game. After 33 years at the helm of Notre Dame, she built a first-class program and team culture. She earned an incredible 77% all-time winning percentage, led her team to 2 NCAA National Titles, and sent 20 of her players to the WNBA–just to name a few of her many accolades.

Speculations abound, but rather than delve deep into my thoughts on those, I would just like to take this moment to send a huge shoutout and heartfelt thank you to Muffet McGraw.

Muffet, in addition to my former college hoops Head Coach and a legend in her own right, Kathy Delaney-Smith, was the motivation for starting my business after the press conference speech she delivered at the Final Four a little over a year ago.

If you still haven’t seen the clip yet, you must check it out. If you have already seen it, watch it again–we need to hear and act on these words now more than ever.

“We don’t have enough visible women leaders. We don’t have enough women in power…That’s not the way it has to be.”  – Muffet McGraw

As I sat listening to this speech for the first time, Muffet’s conviction and poise impressed me so much. Her words made me want to be better

Muffet’s call-to-action kept ringing in my ears to the point where I was compelled to take action, setting out on my personal mission to help women leaders better position themselves to become more visible, reach more people, and impact positive change.

In times like these, it is more important than ever not to forget your own, internal call to action and not to lose sight of your own personal mission. We have all had to reassess and recalibrate our paths forward. The continuing uncertainty makes it hard to plan for the future. But, it is my sincere hope that each and every one of us can hang onto and protect that one source of motivation and inspiration within us that constantly drives us to be better.
