Carol Jue is a groundbreaking figure in the world of collegiate sports. Serving as the first Chinese-American head basketball coach in the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA), she has built a storied legacy at one of the country’s most historic institutions, Chapman University, fueled by a lifelong dedication to her players and inspired by all they represent.
With over two decades of head coaching experience at the esteemed Southern Californian school, Jue has redefined the legacy of the nationally-ranked university by propelling its women’s basketball program to 300 wins, nine NCAA Division III playoff berths, and nine 20-win seasons. Under her intentional guidance, the team has also achieved five All-West Region selections, three Academic All-Americans, six Academic All-District honorees, and three SCIAC Athletes of the Year. Jue’s crowning achievement came in the 2017-18 season when she led the team to their first-ever SCIAC Tournament title.
Jue’s dynamic leadership and spirited coaching prowess have garnered her the accolade of SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year for three consecutive years. For her, basketball transcends sport; it acts as a catalyst for personal development and inspiration. And Jue is committed to using her platform to uplift others on and off the court.
Determined to expand access to sports for women worldwide, Jue uses her voice in public speaking, articles, and media interviews to emphasize the importance of life skills and overcoming fears. As a trailblazer, she empowers women to think positively, guiding them through personal growth and inspiring them to chase their dreams.
As a coach, Jue strikes a balance between developing players to be at their best physically, emotionally, and mentally. At her core, she is dedicated to preparing young women for life beyond the basketball court, helping them discover their true identities and nurturing a strong sense of teamwork. A champion of representation, Jue underscores the significance of work ethic and character in all aspects of life.
Jue holds a bachelor’s degree in economics/accounting from Claremont McKenna College. She was an accomplished student-athlete at both universities and was eventually named MVP and an All-SCIAC team selection. Her basketball career, which began at Montebello High, was recognized with an induction into the Montebello High Hall of Fame as an individual (2011) and as part of a team (2015).
Jue sees challenges and adversity as chances to excel and stand for something greater than ourselves. Committed to empowering others, she is a dedicated representative of her family and community. Residing in Tustin, California with her husband, Kevin, and sons, Ryley and Carson, Jue takes pride in being a trailblazing first-generation American, paving the way for fellow Chinese-Americans around the world.
