The cards you were dealt
Similar to the combination that makes up your hand in a game of cards, your passion and purpose aren’t prescribed, predetermined, or prepackaged. But rather are a result of circumstance, fate, and a little bit of luck. Now, how you play the cards is another story.
When it comes to making an impact in your own life: you’re the dealer, the player, and the house. So, how will you play the cards you were dealt? There’s no right or wrong, but rather a strategy, or story, to unfold. You decide when to play each card for the world to see, which cards to hold a little closer until you’re ready, and ultimately the order and pace with which you play.
Playing your hand
At BREAKTHRU, our Discovery phase starts with identifying your BREAKTHRU Moments: those moments when your personal and professional why’s align. When your purpose is clear. When you are most confidently YOU. We’ve taken the process of identifying your BREAKTHRU Moments and turned it into a purposeful card game. Your purpose and passion are impactful, meaningful, and uniquely yours. And now you can unlock and hone what makes you, you!
Whether you play on your own or with a team – at home, in the office, or even at happy hour – we have made BREAKTHRU Moments to help you find your purpose, define your impact, and ultimately uncover how to play to your strong suits and own the hand you were dealt.
“You can’t change the cards you’re dealt, only how you play them…”
🤷
Sometimes when you hear it said, you can almost hear that shrug at the end. And to be fair – that couldn’t have been further from the author’s intent. The famous and frequently uncredited quote comes from Randy Pausch’s New York Times best seller The Last Lecture. In it, Pausch – having been recently diagnosed with terminal cancer – delivers his last lecture at Carnegie Mellon and poignantly outlines everything he believed about living a life of meaning and impact.
When you consider more of what Pausch says, it becomes clear that it’s far more than just a trite idiom invoked in the face of cancelled flights and flat tires. He also said, “experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted. And experience is often the most valuable thing you have to offer.”
With that in mind, we decided to make a different deck of cards – where the cards change as you play. When the cards are all on the table, there’s an infinite set of outcomes…not just the 2,598,960 we get from poker. Since Pausch was a computer science professor – we hope he would welcome the variation.
Unlocking your brand
At BREAKTHRU, the Discovery phase is the first of our three-step process to uncover your personal why and unlock the power of a more purposeful brand.
Too many leaders define their personal purpose as something standardized and impersonal.
“To help others succeed.”
“To affect change.”
“To be a positive influence.”
“To motivate others”
Or, they lean on any number of meaningful (but ultimately generic) labels picked from resumes, Linkedin profiles, or life in general.
“I’m a CEO”
“I’m a coach”
“I’m a leader”
“I’m a manager”
“I’m a parent”
Of course, there’s nothing wrong or unimportant with aspirations or everyday labels. But aren’t we all more than a specific number, suit, title or status? Think about it: By most estimates, there are over 32.5 million businesses in the United States alone and over 328 million people. That’s a lot of CEOs, managers, leaders, and parents.
When we really get thinking about our purpose and the impact we envision: a label only scratches the surface. That’s where we hope BREAKTHRU Moments can be a fun and engaging way to go beyond just personal branding tips. We want to encourage others to dig deeper and bring true authenticity to your personal and professional brand story.
Finding your why
As Simon Sinek helps explain, your WHY “is the purpose, cause or belief that drives every one of us”. You won’t find it scouring a resume or scrolling the internet, and it’s not always easy to define.
With our BREAKTHRU Moments deck, drawing a card will help you identify your most powerful moments, help build your deck, and tell your greatest story.

What drives you to do what you do? And how can you ensure you do more of it?
Reflecting on the impact you’ve already made and the impact you envision making in the future is a simple and powerful way to chart your course, clarify your purpose, and direct your WHY towards positive results.
Pick a moment, define your impact…see where it takes you. And when you’re ready, we are here to help you hone your brand and share your story with the world.
